Special hours and activities for Thanksgiving week

With many schools on break and families traveling for the Thanksgiving holiday, the Terre Haute Children’s Museum will have special hours and activities this week, including special presentations about turkeys and a variety of other birds, and an interactive press conference to announce a major exhibit that is coming to the Museum in the summer of 2018!

During Thanksgiving week, the Museum will be open during the following hours:

  • Tuesday, Nov. 2110 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Wednesday, Nov. 2210 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Thursday, Nov. 23: Closed
  • Friday, Nov. 2410 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Saturday, Nov. 2510 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Sunday, Nov. 26Noon to 5 p.m.

The Museum will be closed on Monday, Nov. 27, and will resume normal operating hours.

Thanksgiving week at the Museum will also feature some very special activities.

On Tuesday, Nov. 21, at 2:30 p.m., join the Museum for an interactive press conference as we announce plans for a new exhibit coming in the summer of 2018! Be one of the first people to see images of this major addition to the Museum, and participate in some special activities that will help you prepare to master this exhibit when it opens!

5488751On TuesdayWednesdayFriday and Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., flock on in to the Museum to explore birds from beak to tail feathers with a variety of hands-on science activities! Try eating like a bird to test the variety of beaks that can be found on birds, sort turkey feathers by their pupose, make a bird whistle so you can do bird calls, and then make a bird sculpture with scrap materials as you explore all of the parts of a bird.

The Museum will also welcome some special guests this week.

On Wednesday, Nov. 22, at 1 p.m., Amber Slaughterbeck from the Vigo County Parks Department will give a "Turkey Talk" about wild turkeys.

gwen1On Friday, Nov. 24, at 1 p.m., we will welcome Indianapolis-based Take Flight! Wildlife Education and their feathered friends as they present a "Bird of Prey and People" program. Hawks, owls, falcons, and their kin have long held our imagination. See what it’s like to be "hawk eyed" or "falcon fast" by meeting these magnificent predators up close and hearing the stories of our shared history.

And, on Saturday, Nov. 25, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., Museum guests can participate in our "Real Feathered Friends Petting Zoo." Meet a goose, chickens, and baby turkeys!

All activities and presentations are included with Museum admission.

While you're at the Museum, be sure to take advantage of our membership special. Now, through December 31purchase a Terre Haute Children’s Museum membership, and you will receive $25 to spend in our Science Store. And as a nonprofit organization, all proceeds from science store and membership sales go directly to Museum provide educational, interactive exhibits and programs for all children; allowing them to learn through play and develop learning foundations in science, technology, engineering, math and health that contribute to their long term success in school and beyond. The Terre Haute Children’s Museum, located at the corner of 8th Street and Wabash Avenue in downtown Terre Haute, is a nonprofit institution dedicated to enriching our children’s lives through the exploration of science and technology. The Museum receives no city, state or federal funding, relying solely on visitor fees, gifts, donations, and grants to fund its world-class educational exhibits and programs.

Museum admission is free for members of the Terre Haute Children’s Museum and children under 24 months. Regular admission is $8 for adults and children over 24 months. Families who participate in qualifying assistance programs can enroll in the Access Pass program, which allows them to visit the Museum for just $2 per family member per visit.
